GMO labeling is a big initiative right now, with several more states putting the measure on the ballot this November. What’s it all about? States are fighting for their right to make companies label whether or not their food contains genetically modified organisms, such as GMO corn, sugar, soy and more. GMO’s contain the same chemicals found in pesticides and can be a danger to the health and wellness of you and your family.
But you can’t protect yourself from the danger you can’t see – and companies don’t want you to see what they put in your food on that label. Opponents claim that this labeling will be costly and that “organic” labeling covers the matter.
Are they really concerned with the cost of labeling or are they more worried about the cost of changing their business practices to meet this law, which is gaining more and more support from consumers every year? According to Huffington Post’s article, “Here’s What GMO Labeling Will Cost You,” separating genetically engineered foods and ingredients from the rest will be the brunt of the cost for companies to change. It’s a big adjustment, but don’t American consumers deserve the quality of clean food on their plates – or at least the right to know what they are eating? GMO labeling has been a requirement in Europe since 2004, and China has already rejected GMO crops from the U.S. It’s time for our government to step up – and states are the next logical route for deciding this factor.
But states may not get the option either. The “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act,” a bill sitting in Congress now, would block states from requiring labeling for genetically engineered and modified food, effectively taking away state rights in this matter, as well as the will of the people.
GMO labeling has already passed in Maine, Connecticut and Vermont. Oregon, Colorado and parts of Hawaii are the areas voting on the GMO labeling initiative come November. If you are in those states, support the cause, spread the word and vote for the initiative. Learn which of your Congress people represent GMO companies and which support labeling. For example, U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kansas) is the author of the “Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act.”
Americans are shifting their focus to a healthier, real-food-based lifestyle. Fast food chains that are not adapting, like McDonalds, are taking a hit, decreasing in popularity and profitability, while Chipotle, who has been transitioning to Non-GMO foods since last year, has seen a rise in the stock market. You have the final vote: with your dollar! Transition your groceries to Non-GMO Verified and USDA Organic foods. We can get GMO’s labeled so that families everywhere can make safer choices.
