When Stonyfield co-founders Samuel Kaymen and Gary Hirshberg set out to change the world together almost 35 years ago, they didn’t think they would do it with yogurt. However, that’s exactly what happened! While running a nonprofit organic farming school on a small New Hampshire farm, they began making organic yogurt in small batches to sell and help fund the school. People went crazy for the yogurt from Samuel and Gary’s little farm school, and the two soon realized that running a successful organic yogurt company could make a much bigger difference for family farms and the environment than their little school could.
So, Samuel and Gary went all-in on yogurt and the result is apparent on the shelves of grocery stores all across the country. Every Stonyfield product is certified organic – made without the use of toxic persistent pesticides, artificial hormones, antibiotics and GMOs. And while organic farming has always been at the heart of this yogurt business, they take it a step further with sustainable business practices, and programs to help support and train emerging organic dairy farmers.
Another thing that makes Stonyfield unique is their commitment to better packaging. In 2010, they introduced the first yogurt cups made from plants, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 48%. Their single-serving yogurt cups use foil lids instead of plastic, which means they can use 16% less energy, 13% less water and create 6% less solid waste. And with the Preserve Gimme 5 program, they’ve helped turn over 12 million plastic yogurt cups into brand new toothbrushes.
